Connected by Peers
The Children’s Network of Southwest, Behavior Analysis Services Program, Children’s Home Society and community members, developed a new mentoring program for our teens in foster care. It is called Connected by Peers.
This mentoring program has a pro-active approach that focuses on helping youth before situations become hopeless. Our at-risk teens are matched with an individual who provides them with support and knowledge that helps create placement stability and helps them make healthy decisions on their own. This gives them a much better chance to lead successful, normal lives. These mentors are key to the teens success because they have already gone through similar situations and will be able to empathize and build bonds with these youth. This mentoring program gives our teens in foster care the tools they need to face the many challenges they must overcome to successfully transition to adulthood and give them the best shot at achieving their full potential.
Idea: Mentoring foster teen support group run by former foster children.
Basis for Program: Only someone who has gone through foster care as a teen
would understand the issues these teens are facing.
Target Teens: Any teenager currently in the foster care system.
Meetings: 5:30 -7:00 p.m. 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.
"You will come to know that what appears today to be a sacrifice will prove instead to be the greatest investment that you will ever make."
